I have seen this technique on a few blogs and a few celebrities too and I must admit that I was intrigued. I figured there wouldn’t be any way that I could purchase a shirt with a ripped/shredded look, so I began investigating! This is my 2nd time doing this, so I’m still sort of a newbie, but I can share with you what I’ve learned so far.
As you can see in the photo above, it’s sort of a D.I.Y. look. I know there’s places you can “buy” these types of things, but it makes it fun to be able to create it yourself and to your liking. But if you’d like to go the easy route, here’s a bunch found on Etsy.
Start off with a shirt of your liking. I used an old camisole that I wasn’t wearing anymore. I really recommend using an old shirt especially if this is your first time trying this. That way, you wont feel guilty if you mess up a bit.
Cut a small hole into the corner of the shirt. I cut this before I decided to seam rip the entire hem off. It’s a lot easier with a raw edge. You’ll be able to get things done faster. With the hem still attached, the fabric tends to be a lot stiffer and really hard to manage.
Holes in your shirt are not bad at all. This isn’t supposed to be a “pretty” shirt. It’s kind of rough and rugged and holes make it look more authentic.
Here’s the fun part! Once you get the ball rolling, you’ll see how fun and easy it is. Now, this project is very time consuming. It takes a while to get all the threads separated if you want the look of an entire shirt shredded. If you only want the front panel, it splits the time in half. I recommend you take breaks once in a while. It really does a number on your finger strength. Don’t work for long periods of time on this!
If you need to use the seam ripper, be careful. I’ve stabbed myself a few times and it’s not the best feeling in the world. Be careful and enjoy making your own snazzy shirt!
This is the first shredded shirt I’ve ever completed. I did the entire thing and it basically stretched out to twice it’s size! I love that shirt so much and I love it even more knowing that I made it myself!
