On February 25th, I had the chance to interview Teedra Moses before her concert in San Francisco @ Yoshi’s Jazz Club! This was technically my FIRST interview for Vibrant Doll, and I was sooooo excited & nervous! First off, let me tell you, Teedra Moses is SO COOL (just like her song!) lol! She’s very real, sweet, and down to earth. At aroung 4:30, I walked into her soundcheck. Her band was on stage tuning their instruments and playing around, while I heard her backstage working on scales to get her voice warmed up. It was really dope! After about 20 minutes, she came out and introduced herself & I introduced myself. You know deep down, I was like “OMG!!!!!” haha! If you didn’t know, Teedra Moses is one of my favorite singers, so I has having a moment. Even my little brother got nervous, he was like “Hi I’m Bionca’s sister…. I mean brother!” and Teedra was like, “baby you can be whatever you want!” -hilarious. Since it was kinda loud, we went backstage & into her room. We sat down on the couch and then started the interview, and it goes a little something like this:

Bionca: We have been waiting years and years for your sophomore album, “The Young Lioness,” when is it going to be released?

Teedra Moses: It’s going to be released this year, 2010.

Bionca: Realllllllllly?!

Teedra Moses: Yeah! I just recently gave an appetizer on Valentine’s Day, called a Royal Patience Love Journey, just a couple of love songs I had that I wanted to give to people to make them understand that I DO write songs, I just don’t always release them.

Bionca: So the new mixtape, is it a sample of what we’ll be hearing next from you?

Teedra Moses: It’s got a bit of some of the vibe, that’s not all of the vibe. That vibe was specifically just love, you know? I wanted to make it, but you know everybody knows that’s not something I go through all day everyday, thats just what I focused on, so that’s part of the vibe. But there’s other things that I tackle as far as what goes on in my life on the album.

Bionca: Are there any artists or producers you have been working with or worked with for your upcoming album?

Teedra Moses: Trackademicks from here, the bay area. I have a record produced by Raphael Saadiq. I would like to finish up some stuff I’m doing with Wild Jones, kinda some of the same producers on the mixtape.

Bionca: If you had to choose 5 of your favorite artists, who would they be? Like your TOP 5!

Teedra Moses: 5 of my favorite artists would be Sade, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, and Chaka Khan.

Bionca: Are you still writing songs for other artists?

Teedra Moses: When I get projects that I think are something I can do without altering my current state of just wanting to be extremely creative. If it’s something thats in that same band then I can roll with it but if I have to take myself outside of where I am I’m not really interested because I’m focusing on expressing what I feel for myself right now.

Bionca: When did you first fall in love with music?

Teedra Moses: I don’t think I ever fell in love with music, it’s just I was born into it. It wasn’t a conscious thing that happened, it’s just something that I was born into. I guess its like if you had your best friend all awhile and you turn around and look at him “oh i love this dude, I wanna marry him!” and I guess that’s just how it was. I grew up all my life with music around, my mother was a gospel singer, I grew up in New Orleans, that’s a music city, gospel, jazz, and then growing up we kept the radio on all day. It never went off, it only went down, it went up, but never off. So music just has always been around and I never used it as comfort or anything like that. It was just like my bedspread, or a picture that my mother had on the wall, it was just always there. One day I looked up and realized that it was something I could become apart of not just as a listener and consumer, but a creator.

Bionca: You have a big female fan base, girls who look up to you and aspire to be just like you. What would you like to say to them?

Teedra Moses: I would like to say to them I appreciate that, that’s kind, but always aspire to be what has never been. Always aspire to be something greater than what is, do you. Search what it is that you want yourself, not what people want from you. Dig inside yourself to pull your best out that ultimately is going to be pleasing to you and the journey that you’re on, don’t really give a fuck about other people!

Bionca: Awwww thank you so much! I was asking fans, “What would you want to say to Teedra?” and they were like “TELL TEEDRA I LOVE HER!” and haha! I was like ask a question!

Teedra Moses: Awwww that’s so cool! I love it! Can you just make a point to them that I really appreciate them, I don’t consider them fans, thats technically an fanatic. I would not like to believe that people become a fanatic over me, that’s just not a feeling I wanna have. But friends of my music, are fans of mine, because all I’m doing is putting my heart on records. I really really REALLY sincerely with all my heart I really really appreciate them, and I pray for them, and I pray that their lives can be fulfilled with whatever it is they wanna do with their lives like I had a chance to do. I really love and appreciate them!

I’m SOOOO ready for this new album. I can’t wait! The Royal Patience mixtape is wonderful, and if that’s just a taste, then I can only imagine that the new album is going to be crazy! But after the interview, I attended her concert. *SOLD OUT!!!!!!!* and Boyyyy! Does she put on a show! Here are some pictures I took. (I know, I know! I need a better lens, got $600 tho?!)

The concert was amazing, and of course Teedra looked and sounded amazing. She sounds good on her tracks, but even BETTER in person. If you haven’t been to one of her concerts, you need to! She’s really fun on stage, and shes just – Teedra! She performed a couple songs from the new mixtape. I was sooo excited, especially when “R U 4real” came on! And of course, at the end, people were shouting and telling her to perform “Backstroke!” It seems like that’s the song that everybody knows from her, which is a little weird to me because I first discovered Teedra when “Be your girl” came out. But still! GREAT show! If you haven’t downloaded the new mixtape yet, as I had posted previously, go get it! http://www.teedra-moses.com

I’ll never forget how I ‘discovered’ Teedra. I went to a Raphael Saadiq concert at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip and this little dynamic woman went on before him. I was in awe… after her set she came down into the general public and I felt compelled to stop her – even though I am not generally a groupie like that. I just had to tell her how awesome I thought she was. She was just so damn down to earth and sweet and sincere that I was officially a Teedra Stan. Everytime she preforms in the LA area I make it a point to get to the performance. She never fails to amaze me with the way she interacts with the audience – so playful and in tune with us… like we really are just fans of her music.

PS – I go so hard for the song ‘All That I Have’. Its my own personal theme song.

I freaking LUV Teedra. I used to be upset that so many people slept on her, but now I appreciate the loyal fans that keep her music un-commercialized, raw & real. I love the jazz/gospel inspired tunes of hers…This was a good read! <3
